CARING FOR WATER

Ways Of Using Less Water at School

By Mulungi Prosper P.3A

Water is super important, but it’s also precious. At school, we use a lot of water — for drinking, washing hands, cleaning, and even watering plants. But did you know we can use less water and still get everything done? Here are 10 simple ways we can all use less water at school while still staying clean and healthy!

1. 🚰 Turn Off Taps Tight

One of the easiest ways to save water is by making sure we turn off the taps tightly when we’re done using them. Sometimes, the tap keeps dripping if it’s not turned off properly, and that wastes water.
Tip: Always check that the tap is completely closed after washing your hands or filling your water bottle.

2. 💧 Use a Small Cup for Drinking Water

Instead of filling up a big glass, use a smaller cup when drinking water. You’ll still stay hydrated, but you won’t waste extra water that you don’t need!
Tip: Encourage your friends to use small cups to save more water.

3. 🧼 Wash Hands Quickly and Efficiently

When washing your hands, make sure you turn off the water while scrubbing. You don’t need to leave the tap running while you’re washing your hands.
Tip: Wash hands for at least 20 seconds but turn off the tap while you’re scrubbing with soap.

4. 🧴 Don’t Waste Water When Cleaning

When cleaning the classroom or washing dishes in the cafeteria, make sure you only use as much water as needed.
Tip: Fill the sink with just enough water to wash, and don’t let the tap run the whole time.

5. 🚿 Shorten Shower Times

If your school has showers for physical activities, encourage everyone to take shorter showers. Every minute you cut from your shower saves water.
Tip: Set a timer for 5 minutes to keep your shower short and sweet.

6. 🌱 Water Plants Early in the Morning or Late in the Evening

If your school has a garden, it’s best to water the plants early in the morning or late in the evening, when the sun is not so hot. This helps the water soak into the soil before it evaporates.
Tip: Ask your teacher to water the plants when it’s cooler outside.

7. 🧴 Use the Right Amount of Soap

When washing your hands or cleaning, using too much soap can waste water. If you use the right amount, the water won’t have to be used so much to rinse off all the soap.
Tip: Always use just a small amount of soap to wash hands or clean.

8. 🧹 Clean Up Spills Right Away

If you spill water, don’t just leave it. Clean it up right away with a cloth or mop so the water doesn’t get wasted.
Tip: Keep a towel or mop nearby, just in case you spill something!

9. 🏫 Encourage Others to Save Water

It’s fun to save water together! You can remind your classmates to use less water too. When everyone does their part, the school uses much less water.
Tip: Start a Water Saving Challenge at school and see who can use the least water for a week!

10. 🚽 Flush Only When Needed

In the toilets, only flush when necessary. If the toilet is not too dirty, there’s no need to flush it every time you use it.
Tip: Flush only when it’s really needed to save water!
